Plan Your Next Move with More Strategy and Less Guesswork
Whether you’re choosing your first job, changing roles, or trying to leave the wrong fit behind, this page will help you think through your next move before you make it.
Before You Start Applying Everywhere…
A lot of bad career moves happen because people react before they get clear. Before you start applying, figure out whether the real problem is the specialty, setting, employer, schedule, workflow, support, culture, burnout, or something else.
Ask Yourself These 4 Questions:
1. What is actually wrong right now?
Take time to honestly evaluate your current situation before you assume you know the problem. Is it the specialty, the setting, the employer, the schedule, the workflow, the support, the culture, or something else entirely?
2. What needs to be different next time?
Get specific about what you need more of in your next role. Are you looking for more autonomy, better mentorship, less call, a different patient population, stronger leadership, more flexibility, or a healthier pace?
3. Does this move actually solve the problem?
Do not confuse “different” with “better.” Look closely at whether the role you are considering gives you more of what you want, or whether you are about to trade one frustrating situation for another.
4. Is it time to think bigger?
Sometimes the right move is a better job in the same field. Sometimes it is switching specialties and finding a clinical environment that fits you better. But if you keep coming back to the feeling that another clinical role is not the answer, it may be time to consider non-clinical work, entrepreneurship, education, leadership, consulting, or another way to use your clinical background.
